Our History

Fleur de lis Floral Design is located on picturesque Skaneateles Lake, a gateway to the Finger lakes in Central New York. It is a sought-after wedding and event floral company in the highly visited and wedding destination village of Skaneateles. The company started its journey in October of 1974. For 10 years Fleur de lis operated in a rented space at 62 E Genesee Street. The floral business moved into its permanent location at 26 E Genesee Street when the building was purchased by Richard and Sandra Schmidt in 1983. It was formerly known as Tucker Hardware and housed various businesses, such as a marina and gas station on the waterfront. Richard Schmidt renovated the interior of 26 East Genesee St, including the basement which became a retail space along with some apartments and suites, and the retail storefront of Fleur de lis. David Lee, master mason and carpenter, rebuilt the building’s facade.

Fleur de lis flourished at its new storefront and was one of the few businesses in the village in the 1970’s. Sandra was a key player along with other small business owners in recruiting new businesses to start up in downtown Skaneateles. The village had many empty store fronts but several small bars & pubs. Richard and Sandra were both, respectively, President of the Skaneateles Merchants Association and Richard was the President of the Chamber of Commerce in the late 70’s. Fleur de lis started an additional business in the early 80’s called “Plant Interiors” providing weekly fresh flowers, plant installations and plant maintenance to businesses, restaurants and homes, in the entire area including Syracuse and Syracuse University. As the economy went into a recession, that extension of the floral business was limited due to cutbacks in tougher times for local businesses and restaurants. The flower business became more specialized in everyday floral design, offering a wide variety of North American, South American and European specialty flowers. Skaneateles was becoming a destination for weddings and events. Fleur de lis became very pronounced in the wedding and event floral design market concentrating and specializing in the wedding, party and event part of the floral industry.

In 2019, Fleur de lis celebrates their 45th Anniversary. The floral business is being handed down to family and continues to blossom and grow with the demand for high quality and modern design. Sandra Schmidt, principal designer, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rosary Hill College (Damon College) has been mentoring her son Devon Schmidt, who is the current owner and has a bachelor’s degree of Business Administration Technology Management from SUNY Delhi. Fleur de lis is passionate about all things floral. The signature style is luxe and lavish, which is sure to please.
